About the Book

Two lovers crest the wave of the golden age of Athens: Pericles, statesman and general, and Aspasia, his courtesan, a philosopher’s daughter and a brilliant woman in her own right. In a world of hierarchies, he is at the top when she arrives as little more than flotsam cast up on Athenian shores. Their love transcends social sanctions, enduring and deepening despite the grave threat it presents to Pericles’ reputation as a leader of the Athenian democracy.

The novel unfolds against the background of the arts and history of the Golden Age seen through the eyes of two individuals who lent their particular brilliance to make it “golden,” Pericles, the great orator and visionary of democracy and its most influential woman, Aspasia. Their story takes them from the Agora—Athens’ marketplace—to the Acropolis, from the mercantile, raunchy Athenian Port Piraeus across the Aegean Sea to East Greece. Pericles and Aspasia—together and apart—navigate treacherous paths from venal calculations to impassioned philosophical inquiry, from high-stakes sea battles to the passions of family life.

Pericles and Aspasia engages issues that are vital today—the paradoxes of democracy, the tensions of hierarchy, the ironies of gender, and others—but this novel is immersed in classical Athens: the city, its sunshine, its physical presence, its people and their struggles and aspirations.

Praise for Pericles and Aspasia

Characters Driven by Destiny and Bowed by Hubris

The Bookish Historian

Breathtaking in execution, exquisite in detail, realistic in interpretation... a vibrant novel that bears the hallmarks of similar writers such as Madeline Miller (author of Circe and The Song of Achilles): deep worldbuilding, consideration to the gods, characters driven by destiny and bowed by hubris... I can’t recommend this novel enough.

Entertaining and Educational

Andrea Webber

The love story of two exceptional and brilliant people of Ancient Greece, Pericles and Aspasia, is engaging and true to life today. But this book is also a living account rich with the insights of an Art Historian of the construction of the magnificent Parthenon still standing today to the glory of Athene and her city, the birthplace of Democracy. At the birth of our own Democracy the Constellations came together to give us the various geniuses of Washington, Adams, Franklin documented to ring throughout our history by the poetic sensibility of Thomas Jefferson. So too in Ancient Athens we see the coming together, led by Pericles, the visionary greats of architecture, sculpture, masonry, engineering and the philosophers who fed their vision to create and erect the temple and symbol of Athenian democracy still standing, still glorious today. Pericles had to use all his gifts of oratory, persuasion, political savvy, sheer determination to get the necessary funding, reminiscent of similar struggles in our democracy today. Pericles and Aspasia entertained and educated me, giving me a greater glimpse of the Big Picture I am always looking for when I sit down to read a book!

More than a wonderful Love story: a Lesson in Leadership and Democracy for our Time

Old Master

An incredible love story, but insights into what democracy was in the early days. Although Pericles was a general he commanded fleets of ships and personally led battles, securing peace for Athens and its dependent territories, which provided revenues. He was careful not to become too powerful as to avoid the label of tyrant, and like George Washington was willing to step aside. Aspasia must be one of history's most talented women. The building of the Parthenon and statue of Athena were his enduring projects, and the building stands in Athens today, but the statues have been looted to England. But a visit to Nashville to see the reconstruction of that building, in a park and not on a hilltop, is a good second choice. The story does not end and one can hope that another volume will follow.

Immersive story on an epic scale

Cmthompson

From the first chapter, you are immersed in the world of ancient Athens, during the period of Pericles' leadership of a democratic state. Pericles and Aspasia appear as real and compelling figures, and the author draws you into their world, in its domestic details, its political intrigues, and military campaigns. So many of the struggles Pericles faced to maintain his authority and see his vision - of the Parthenon and of a stable democratic society - fulfilled, resonate today. Best of all, it is a really good read!

A World Comes To Life

Phil

PERICLES AND ASPASIA is a great love story, how they lived, loved, and the parts they played in the Golden Age of Athens, democracy included. and beyond that, it brings to life a great creative period in our culture. The characters are very much alive through their dialogues--such as e Socrates, the playwright Sophocles–you get to know them. I liked that the secondary characters are vivid, too—I will never forget Aspasia’s friend Silky who she first met when they were both courtesans - hetaira. We witness the construction of the Parthenon and the rational for the famous sculptures. Also, the possible scandal of the missing gold. We sail to Samos and are engaged in the sea battle and siege. PERICLES AND ASPASIA is a thrilling read.

Terrific

Amagazing

I found this book through word of mouth and was hooked after the first two paragraphs. High adventure, politics, romance — it gets even better as it goes along.
